Walkman One (for NW-ZX300Series)

This update wouldn't be possible without the generous donation of a WM1A from Nayparm (after having to sell mine). Check out his website, www.npaudio.uk, for hardware modifications for WM1A/Z, ZX300, and more!

Most of the answers to your questions are already answered below, or in the info files that can be found in the downloaded firmware archive, or in the FAQ. For example, in the "External_Tunings" folder there is a info file describing what to do to change the sound signature. Please read all this info, and if you couldn't find the answer to a certain question, you can ask it below, in the comments section, or via email. Thanks!

Updates (September 20th):
- instead of having separate firmware packages for different sound signatures, you can now choose (in the settings file) from 4 available sound signatures that come in a single package;

Midnight is now the "Warm" sound signature, while Dawn (v2.1, unreleased before) is the "Bright" sound signature. The other two sound signatures are "Neutral" (which sits somewhere between Warm and "Bright") and "WM1Z", which is the Sony NW-WM1Z sound.

- in the "CFW" folder in the internal storage, where the settings file can also be found, you will now see a "StockRevert" folder, containing everything required to get back to the stock firmware;
- in the same folder you will also see an "External_Tunings" folder, which contains the external tunings for the 4 sound signatures, as well as info related to the applying of these tunings (both these folders require about 246 MB available in the internal storage).

Features:
- 4 sound signatures in 1 package: "Neutral", "Warm", "Bright", and the "WM1Z" stock sound;
- an additional settings system, which can be found in the Internal Storage (in the "CFW" folder), allowing you to set various settings (open the settings file, [settings.txt], for more info);
- a boot log file for the settings system, to check if the settings file is read correctly and all the values are valid (can be found in the same "CFW" folder);
- info about the file being played showing up at the top of the playback screen;
- a bar indicating the audio volume is showing up at the top of the screen;
- the CEW2 region doesn't apply a volume limit with this firmware;
- three boot modes: "Normal", "Plus v1", and "Plus v2" (find settings for these in the settings file);
- DSEE AI (present on DMP-Z1);
- visualizations more in sync with the music;
- progressive JPEG and interlaced PNG album covers are supported.

Boot modes:
"Plus v1" - a different flavor of the normal chosen sound signature;
"Plus v2" - usually better than the Plus v1 mode, and it also consumes less battery;
"Normal" - provides the normal chosen sound signature;

Please read the FAQ for more info about how to install/revert back to stock from this firmware, about the settings file, or about how to change/start in the chosen Plus mode.

You can also find info related to installing and reverting to stock or about the tunings in the downloaded ZIP archive, from the link below.

What should I do if I'm using one of the previous/existing custom firmware versions?

1. Revert to stock using the StockRevert package corresponding to your currently installed firmware

2. Install "Walkman One", following the instructions available in the downloaded ZIP archive

You can find the StockRevert for the previous modded firmware versions, here

    1. Hey, this is how it also works on the stock firmware.

      Settings in the player's menu are not saved instantly. The settings are usually saved about 10 seconds after you turn the screen off or if you turn off the player normally.

      So instead of restarting the player, you can turn it off normally, and then on again.

    2. ok thanks, i think its a bug because i'm used to the old system, tomorrow i'll try again and start adapting :)

    3. There is nothing changed related to settings that you can change in the player's menu, this is how they always worked, as I described it above.

      The settings file system doesn't intersect with the settings from the player's menu.

    4. Yes ,finally everything is working normally and I really like the WM1Z tuning,, Great Job..... thanks you..

    5. have you tried the neutral tuning? what is the difference between neutral and WM1Z tuning?

    6. I went back to the original firmware, I don't know if it's just me or someone else also getting the bug, when using bluetooth mode the receiver just a few seconds suddenly freezes

      Delete
    7. When it freezes, it also makes strange sounds, because I'm afraid something bad will happen so I go back to the original firmware for reasons of convenience..waiting for the latest version that is more fixed

      Delete
    8. This is only happening in BT Receiver mode if you're using Plus v2. It is mentioned in the settings file at the "Plus mode version" option. It will not be fixed in the future.

      It's up to you if you choose to not use the firmware.

      Cheers.

    9. "While using the Plus v2 mode and playing audio via BT Receiver while the screen is off, the audio may glitch. Force restart the player by holding the power button for 7 seconds if this happens."

      All written word by word in the settings file at the "Plus mode version" option. This is why I always tell people to read.

    10. You're right, I do use V2 and I forgot that there was a little bug even though I read it yesterday, sorry .... and I honestly admit that the sound is better than stock

  2. It would be nice for the bar indicating audio volume on top of the screen and info about file being played to be optional.
    Other than that it's perfect. Keep up the great work

    1. Yes, otherwise what's the point of different sound signatures?

      Read info about how to change the sound signature though, don't just try to apply another tuning.

    1. Yes, because this firmware was made for a slightly bigger screen. It's nice that I managed to get it to look ok on these smaller screens at all, so I consider the covering thing just a small trade-off.

  10. Thank you for your continuous effort and great work. I recently installed your latest mod (the "One") and have been trying out the wz1 profile for the time being, the only thing I noticed after all was that the hours played counter has been reset. Is this how it should be? Any way to go back to the real count?
    cheers

    1. Hey, please read the FAQ for more info about this.

    2. Hi, just looked at the FAQ - nothing has been written about that. I have the same question. The counter of the played music has been reset - is that how it should be? Can I get it back somehow?

      Delete
    3. "For the A30/40/50 and ZX300, settings will be backed up internally, and restored if you'll use the StockRevert package."

      So the hours played will be restored to the original value once you get on the stock firmware.

    4. Understood. Thank you very much for your efforts, the sound with WalkmanOne really gets much better (more detailed, brighter, richer), not to mention the variety of customization options.

  11. Thank you for making this amazing firmware!!
    I know it is hard to keep everything in a smaller screen, and if I remember correctly, the top volume is inseparable with the song format bar. However, is it possible to push the volume bar out of the display area (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1puYbYjTOJuyCpzd8tYH2KxWD5-is8B7Z/view?usp=sharing), so everything can push up a little bit and get some more rooms.
    Thank you again

  12. I downloaded this firmware and when I installed Bright_external_tuning it prompted "Connect the player to the computer with a USB cable." but installing the other two External_ Tunings are fine. The same problem occurs on my friend's ZX300a.

    2. I got same problem too , you can try this:
      1.you need to unplug the usb cable after modify setting file
      2.run the Bright_external_tuning and click "Next" , it will show "Connect the player to the computer with a USB cable." when the player is starting
      3.plug the usb cable when the player is ready to use , open mass storge , then the Bright_external_tuning will start install automatically

      anyway , i am very appreciate MrWalkman for build up the custom firmware~~ thank you very much , love u :)

    Is there anyway to change the EQ to a parametric or dynamic EQ? Or maybe even just type your own freq / dB value boxes?
    Just some way to get a little more specific in setting the equalizer.
    Thanks!
    *The search bar function also seems very helpful if possible

    1. There will be a modification in the next update that will bring low latency to the USB DAC mode. Sound effects will not work with this modification, as the audio doesn't get through the Walkman app.

  20. Hi MrWalkman, thanks for a new firmware. For those who are interested in the full load time of the zx 300,in my case(238.46 GB, 5929 songs) on stock firmware load time was 56 seconds, on walkman one is 1minute and 1 sec. By ''full load time'' i mean the moment when the screen ligts up (after pressing the power button) until menu appears. Not a big deal, just for reference.

    Hello Mr. Walman,

    Thank you for providing the new firmware! After installing the custom firmware on my NW-ZX300, I encountered the following issues:

    1.The layout size of the system's audio file information box does not match and is obscured by the playback page; the control button position is offset too much and is obstructed by the screen.
    2.The device tends to get warm, and there is a chance of it freezing for 1 second during operation.
    3.The functionality items for CUE & APE table are missing.
    Note: Please ensure that the "playback time" feature is retained after the update.

    The email attachment includes a log file and screenshots of the bugs, which should be helpful for your work! I hope you can take some time to address these issues as they are significant for all ZX300 users! Sincere thanks for all that you do!
